 Massive Earthquake Shakes the Border of China and Tajikistan

A significant earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked the Tajikistan and China border region on February 23, 2023.

Since the epicenter of the earthquake was about 80 km below the surface, it would cause significant damage to local infrastructure or structures.

Impact on the Region

Although the earthquake's relatively deep epicenter, neighboring people, including those in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, felt it. Buildings trembling and minor infrastructure damage, such as to roads and bridges, have been reported. Residents of China's Xinjiang province reported feeling prolonged tremors from the earthquake.

Response from Authorities

After the earthquake, both China and Tajikistan swiftly sent squads of volunteers and relief supplies to the afflicted districts. No fatalities or serious damage have been reported as a result of the earthquake, according to Chinese authorities. However, Tajikistan has claimed that while a number of individuals have been hurt, no deaths have yet been officially confirmed.
